Toward a General Animated Transition Framework

I was the lead author on our research identifying the most effective ways to animate transitions between data states in various visualizations.

From the abstract: "Our framework defines how individual data transitions should be composed into a complete animation including individual animation methods, pacing, and staging. Our initial evaluation efforts test which staging arrangements allow for the most accurate understanding of the change in the data, as well as which are most preferred by end users."

Data Can Be Beautiful: Crafting a Compelling Story with SAS® Visual Analytics

I worked with four authors to detail design best practices for business intelligence reporting tools using SAS Visual Analytics.  We published our work for the company's Global Forum, which hosts over 5,000 attendees each year. 171 people attended our paper session.

From the abstract: "This paper describes how to guide your reader’s movement through a report to support comprehension of the data story. It includes tips on how to express quantitative data using the most appropriate graphs, suggests ways to organize content using visual design techniques, and explains how color can be used to enhance the efficacy of a report. A thoughtfully designed report can educate the viewer without compromising visual appeal. Included here are recommendations and examples to help you create reports that are both informative and beautiful."
